Do you feel ready for wedding season? The average cost of getting hitched has risen by 54% in the past five years as brides and grooms-to-be feel increasing pressure to make their big day Instagram-worthy.
And that’s not to mention the financial strain of being a guest. If you’re attending multiple events in a year, plus their respective stag and hen-dos, it can feel like the odds are stacked against you. But there are simple ways to cut back.
Here are four tips to help you be a wedding guest for less;
Make a realistic budget
Even with a seemingly solid plan in place, one-off or irregular costs such as a new outfit or wedding present can have a nasty habit of blowing our budgets to bits.
This time round factor in each wedding you plan to attend and work out how much you can realistically afford to spend. Preparing early will allow you to start saving as soon as possible and give you longer to research financial alternatives.
Book accommodation in advance
Hotels were the largest expense for wedding attendees in 2019. Booking in advance is always likely to save you money on accommodation, while clubbing together for a shared room will help to bring the final price down even further.
If you think you could stay with a nearby friend or fellow guest instead, make sure to ask about crashing at theirs before everyone else gets the same idea.
Recycle an outfit
You’re under no obligation to buy a new outfit for every wedding you attend, of course – but it can feel that way. Why not combine an old outfit with new accessories to reduce your outlay? You could even try renting if there’s an option out there that catches your eye.
If you absolutely have to wear something new, try to choose an item you know you’ll wear again and again.

While most guests prefer not to turn up empty handed, there are plenty of ways to save on your wedding present too. See if you can find a group to team up with and share the cost, or use your creative skills to make something more personal.
