Over the past six months or so, I've went from having a pretty normal scalp that never caused me any issues, to having it feel itchy, shedding flakes and looking red and irritated on a daily basis. Enter the new Ameliorate scalp care range.

I've tried a few different anti dandruff shampoos and treatments from the likes of Boots but nothing has made any real difference to how my scalp looked or felt. So when I heard that Ameliorate, a brand that I trust to help with the dry skin on the rest of my body (their Transforming Body Lotion is a literal game changer!), had released a scalp range, I knew that I would have to put it to the test. And that's exactly what I've been doing since it was first released in mid January.
So here is my review of the new Ameliorate scalp care range;
Ameliorate Clarifying Shampoo (£16)
Now I must admit, despite blogging about beauty, I never pay more than a few pounds for shampoo. Which, when I think about how often I use it and the effect that it could possibly have on my scalp, that now feels rather silly. So I've made it my aim to invest a little more in a product that I use several times a week, every week, especially when I splurge on other beauty items but neglect a real essential.
I have tried pricier shampoos in the past but they've always been too rich for my hair and scalp but this one leaves my hair feeling squeaky clean, without feeling stripped in the slightest. I'm certainly happy to use this one going forward.
Ameliorate Smoothing Conditioner (£18)
I'm not the biggest fan of conditioner and a lot of the time I skip it completely. But this is a really lovely and nourishing one that doesn't leave my hair feeling laden with product afterwards. It's creamy but not too thick and I definitely noticed that it was easier to put a comb through my hair after I got out of the shower. And since brushing and combing the hair can often make scalps feel even more irritated, that is definitely a good thing.
Ameliorate Transforming Scalp Serum (£20)
Now I wasn't sure what to expect with this specific product but it was easily the one that gave me the most immediate relief. If you are struggling with a really itchy or tight feeling scalp, I urge you try this out ASAP! The comfort that it gave my scalp was unreal.
It's actually an overnight serum, so you apply this directly onto a dry scalp before bed and leave it to work its magic. Then you wash out (with the shampoo followed by the conditioner) in the morning. It uses Lactic Acid (an AHA) to encourage the scalp’s natural exfoliation process, gently softening surface dead skin cells and debris. But there's also a blend of Oat Oil, Celery Seed Oil, Frankincense extract and minerals to replenish hydration and repair the moisture barrier. If I had to pick just one product from the line, this would be it.
Ameliorate Clarifying Scalp Exfoliant (£20)
I've tried a few scalp scrubs and exfoliants in my time but these have nearly all been solely physical exfoliators. So scrubs with physical particles in them that rub away dead skin and flakes. But this Scalp Exfoliant, like the Scalp Serum, also uses Lactic Acid to gently dissolve dead skin cells without stripping the scalp or leaving it dehydrated. This chemical exfoliation combined with physcial exfoliation makes it much more effective for me and my scalp.
You leave this on the scalp for a few minutes (I normally let this happen whilst I'm getting washed) before rinsing it off. The very handy nozzle makes it easy to apply the product directly onto the scalp, without wasting any on the lengths of your hair. My scalp felt significantly less itchy and irritated after using this particular product and I've noticed a big reduction in the amount of flakes on my scalp since.
There's also a fifth product in the range, the Soothing Scalp Essence, which is only available in the Regime Kit.
