You know that weird in between period between Christmas and New Year when you don't know what day it is, how many Celebrations you've eaten or when you last got dressed. I'm actually a big fan of this time. as you can chill out and relax with absolutely zero expectations on yourself. And it's why I'm sharing what to watch between Christmas and New Year with you today.
This year I'll be using those days to start reading some of the books that I will have received for Christmas and of course, lounging in front of the TV, perhaps with a glass of Buck's Fizz in hand.
So here are the TV shows and movies to watch in between Christmas and New Year this year;
The Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special (airing on BBC One on Christmas Day)
I don't know about you but this is one show that I cannot wait to sit down and watch on Christmas Day. The previous Gavin & Stacey Christmas special is without a doubt my favourite Christmas episode of all time, so I have high expectations for this year's take on it.
I'm not the biggest James Corden fan (seriously, who is?!) but I'm willing to put those feelings aside to enjoy catching up with the Shipman's, Bryn, Nessa and even Smithy. Who else will be watching it on Christmas Day?
This Is Us (Season 3 starts streaming on Amazon Prime Video on Christmas Day)
One of the best TV shows of recent years, even if it makes me cry most episodes, will now be streaming on Amazon Prime Video after being dropped by More4 here in the UK.
If you haven't seen it before, I urge you to catch up with the first two seasons in preparation for season 3 starting. You will not regret it! It tells the story of the Pearson family before the kids came along, when they were growing up and now as adults themselves. It's just so good and to have the most recent season here in the UK and ready to binge watch, is definitely cause for celebration.
You (Season 2 starts streaming on Netflix on Boxing Day)
Last year I spent most nights between Christmas and New Year getting sucked into the show that everyone was talking about; You. See my full review of that here. And season 2 starts on Boxing Day this year, allowing you to become hooked all over again.
If you somehow didn't see the first season, it stars Penn Badgley, of Gossip Girl fame, as one of the creepiest characters that I have seen on screen. And the brilliant thing is, even though he's a complete sociopath, you find yourself rooting for him at times. I can't wait to see what happens in season two, particularly as there were so many moments and scenes in the first season that I genuinely did not expect at all. Seriously, start loading up Netflix right now if you haven't seen it yet.
The Big Fat Quiz Of The Year (airs on Channel 4 on Boxing Day)
One of my favourite shows to watch between Christmas Day and New Year is The Big Fat Quiz Of The Year and it wouldn't feel like Christmas in our household without us watching it.
It's the perfect show to put on when you just feel like taking it easy and it never fails to make me laugh out loud. This year's teams comprise of my very favourites Richard Ayoade and Noel Fielding (who remembers the Goth Detectives when Russell Brand used to be on it every year?), Dara O'Briain and Maya Jama and Asim Chaudhry and Roisin Conaty. There's also going to be a The Big Fat Quiz Of The Decade the following week, which will also be a great watch even if I have no doubt forgotten everything that happened between 2010 and now.
Nailed It! Holiday! (streaming now on Netflix)
Quite literally the opposite of The Great British Bake Off, Nailed It! takes three terrible bakers and sets them two challenges with hilarious results. If you've ever seen those memes of what a cake should actually look like from somewhere like Pinterest and then what it actually looks like, that's what you'll see take shape on Nailed It!
There are three regular seasons, with each episode having a different theme (if you've not seen them already, I really urge you to!) But there are now two holiday seasons to get you in the festive mood and oh boy are there some sights to behold. If you're looking for something easy to watch over Christmas, this is it!
So those are some of my top TV and movie picks for this year. We also have a tradition as a family of watching The World's Strongest Man competition and of course, old favourites like Home Alone, The Grinch and The Holiday too.
