SPF That You'll Actually Want To Apply This Summer

Even though we should all be wearing some form of SPF, specifically on our face, on a daily basis, now that the sun is making a regular appearance sun protection is absolutely vital. As a pale skinned, freckly, redhead I have to wear it pretty much religiously which has allowed me to try out quite a few different products and brands in my time.

I have a feeling that many of us are either put off by the white residue that some lotions leave, the time it takes to make sure that you've properly applied it or just the hassle of applying it altogether. So I thought that I would share some of my absolute favourites and to even break them down into hopefully helpful categories. Even though I'm mainly featuring higher factor SPFs, most are also available in lower factors so be sure to click through to see the other options available if one or several of them sound up your street.

So without further ado, here are the SPF products that you'll actually want to apply this Summer;

If you're lounging by the pool...

Since many of us will be heading off somewhere warm and sunny this Summer, I thought that I would start with two SPFs that would be perfect for lying by the pool.

Vichy Ideal Soleil SPF 30 Hydrating Solar Protective Water

Vichy Ideal Soleil SPF 30 Hydrating Solar Protective Water*

I was really intrigued when I first saw this new release from Vichy and honestly can't wait to take it on holiday with me later in the year. It basically feels like a product that was made for me in the fact that it's designed to hydrate skin. If your skin is drier than the Sahara Desert and only feels tighter when it's exposed to the sun, I really do urge you to give this a try!

It doesn't leave any kind of visible residue which is such a big thing for those of us who hate that white pasty look that most SPFs leave behind, making it a great choice for women and men of colour too. It also doesn't feel greasy or oily on the skin either. Instead my skin feels moisturised and properly protected, which is such a nice change. I can definitely see this being a big hit this Summer!

Bioderma Photoderm Bronz SPF 50+ Dry Oil

Now if you're planning to lie by the pool and actually get a suntan but in a safe way, then this is the product for you. I've always been put off the idea of using oil in an effort to tan, mostly because I never ever tan naturally but also because it conjures up images of wrinkly old sun damaged bodies for me. This product, on the other hand, isn't your typical tanning oil. It protects against premature aging whilst also intensifying and prolonging your natural tan. So get those 'Tan With You' (fans of Ru Paul's Drag Race will know exactly what I mean) images out of your head.

It can also be used on the face and the body and would be the one product that I would recommend if you're really looking to get the bronzed beach babe look in a safe way.

For everyday application...

The next few are some of the best for everyday easy application, both to the face and body.

Superdrug Solait Kid's Trigger SPF 50+

Since I'm such a big fan of Superdrug's Solait range (it's easily my favourite budget or High Street sun care range!), I thought that I would give this contraption a try. If you're someone who's prone to burning or ridiculously pale like I am, I would always recommend giving a range designed specifically for children a try. They're often even more affordable than the main sun care ranges.

This is also a really big bottle for the price so it should last you a decent amount of time or if you actually have children, should make applying SPF that much quicker, easier and stress-free. As an adult without kids, I find that the trigger applications really does make it so easy to cover large areas like the legs and arms without having to spend ages doing so.

Pixi Sun Mist*

I was very kindly provided with the Pixi Sun Mist to give a whirl in the run up to this Summer and I'm pretty happy to have been given it. It's not greasy, can easily be toted around with you in your handbag or even in your hand luggage. I also found that it left my skin feeling lovely and smooth thereafter, something that certainly can't be said for all facial SPFs.

My only slight issue with it is that the pump applicator can sometimes take a bit of squirting for it to actually come out so if you're buying it with the intention of it really being like a fine mist, it technically isn't but don't let that put you off. I actually use it by pumping an amount into my hands and then applying it to my face, neck and decolletage and don't find it too thick or too greasy either. It's also cruelty free much like Superdrug's Solait range and really leaves your skin feeling so nice and soft.

La Roche-Posay ANTHELIOS SPF 50+ Anti-Shine Invisible Fresh Mist*

Now this is a mist! And using one like this basically guarantees even application. It also leaves you with a completely matte finish making it great for using on the face and on oilier skin. It doesn't sting or irritate the eye area, which is an issue that I've found with several cheaper drugstore facial SPFs. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that it's been made by a brilliant skincare brand and by the fact that it includes La Roche-Posay's iconic thermal spring water. If you've read Ellis Tuesday before, you will probably know how much I love this brand and the way in which their products work for me and my skin and this is no different.

It's definitely one to stock up on and use throughout the year as your facial SPF!

Bioderma Photoderm SPF 50+ Mineral Spray*

As you'll have seen me mention in other posts, my Mum also likes to have her opinion on beauty products so today I thought that I would share one of her top picks too. I initially gave this a try and wasn't completely blown away by it so it ended up getting passed on to my Mum. She, on the other hand, really rates this spray.

Again, it's more of a traditional spray rather than a fine mist but it doesn't claim to be that anyway. It does leave you with more of that white residue that I'm not particularly a big fan of but for my Mum, that's exactly what she expected. She's been using it on her face, arms, neck and decolletage these past couple of weeks when the sun has really been making an appearance here in Scotland and hasn't been burnt or had any breakouts, which for her, is a win.

For on the go...

And last but certainly not least, we have two little travel sized tubes perfect for taking with you on the go.

La Roche-Posay ANTHELIOS XL SPF 50+ Ultra-Light Fluid

Superdrug Solait SPF 50 Pouch

I tried and tested this particular SPF both on my trip to New York in July of last year and on my trip to Florida two years ago. This ensured that I could top up my sun protection throughout the day, particularly on areas that were really being exposed to the sun, such as my arms and chest. I'm pretty sure that this little easy to carry pouch is the main reason that I didn't burn once during either trip and I mean, how can you go wrong at just £1.99 a pouch. They also often do a buy one get one half price promotion on their whole Solait range over the Summer months so it's well worth taking advantage of it and is why I have about four backup pouches sitting in my beauty drawer right now at this present moment.

La Roche-Posay ANTHELIOS XL SPF 50+ Ultra-Light Fluid

If you're looking for sun protection that you can literally carry around with you either in your pocket or in your handbag, then this little bottle has seriously got you covered. I specifically use this as a facial SPF as I find that it doesn't irritate, leave me with that noticeable white residue or break me out into any spots or blemishes, like many other facial SPFs have. It also doesn't smell too overpowering, which is a big plus when you're using it on the face and this Summer La Roche-Posay have launched an even smaller 30ml bottle of it! I mean, how cute and dinky is this one?!
