What to watch on TV this week

Now that it's getting darker earlier and earlier each night. I certainly feel more inclined to stay in, get cosy and stick on the TV. And I think that will become more than apparent when you see what I've been watching this month.

So let's see what I've been watching in October and 5 ideas for what to watch next;

Louis Theroux: Dark States

I've probably mentioned on here before, namely in my What I've Been Watching blog posts, that I love a good documentary. And nobody does it better than Louis Theroux in my opinion. His latest trio of documentaries, which you'll still be able to find on BBC iPlayer, focus on three cities in the US. And the problems that blight them. Such as heroin, sex trafficking and gun violence. Which also echo the issues faced by many across the country. I also see that there's another one, this time on anorexia, on tonight. So I'll definitely be tuning into that. When it comes to my 5 ideas for what to watch next, this would definitely be my top recommendation this month.

As always, it's heartbreaking to see some of the scenes and situations that some people are in. But Louis offers a different perspective than many other journalists. One that I could happily watch every single week of the year. Which is why I'm always a little disappointed that they haven't made more when a new documentary or series is released. I guess I'll just need to go back and watch old episodes on Netflix to get my Louis fix.

The Apprentice

Another favourite of mine, that I look forward to starting each and every year is The Apprentice. From the tasks to Claude and Karen's facial expressions to the terrible one liners that most of the contestants come out with at some stage of the process. It may be guilty pleasure viewing but it's oh so good. This year the contestants are even more argumentative and have already messed up some relatively simple tasks. If you haven't seen the one where they've to makeover a luxury hotel room, I urge you to catch up with it on iPlayer ASAP! I don't know if it's because I'm always dreaming about homeware, as you will have seen in My Current (Under £50) Homeware Wishlist. But both teams mess it up so badly!

There are specific weeks or tasks that I eagerly anticipate every series, in particular the one where they're handed a list of items to source and locate. And of course, the interviews. I also love the accompanying show hosted The Apprentice: You're Fired, which follows the main show. Is it sad that one of the only things that gets me through a Wednesday is the fact that I've got The Apprentice to watch that night?

Hush

I mentioned in last month's What I'd Been Watching post that I'd be watching some Halloween classics such as Hocus Pocus, I Know What You Did Last Summer and the Scream movies. Which I did but I also watched a movie that I keep meaning to share with you on here. And that is Hush. I originally saw it for the first time at the start of the year and have watched it several times since then, it's that good. I often find that home invasion horror movies are some of the most unsettling and scariest to watch. As unlike ghosts or demons, the danger feels much more real as it could, in essence, happen to you. I'm normally genuinely frightened and I then spend that night flinching at every little noise that I hear outside. Which to me, makes for a successful horror movie. Hush is a real hidden gem of a horror movie. And it is currently available to watch on Netflix.

The reason that it's called Hush is because the female protagonist is deaf, making the threat of an intruder all the more harrowing and difficult to protect herself against. Let's just say, I certainly wouldn't be as quick witted as she is. The ending in particular is so satisfying. And the entire movie is one that I would recommend over and over again. Especially when you're searching for something new to watch.

Pan Am

Speaking of hidden gems; that's exactly how I feel about Pan Am too, as not a lot of people have heard of it. Sadly it was cancelled way too early, only getting one season. There's just so much that I love about this show. From the fantastic fashion of the time, along with the hair and makeup, to the storylines and actors and actresses who bring them to life.

It stars Christina Ricci (Wednesday Adams for all you Adams Family fans, like me), Karine Vanasse, who was also in another one of my favourite TV shows; Revenge. Kelli Garner who plays Kate Cameron aka. my favourite character and fellow redhead. And Margot Robbie before she hit it big in Hollywood. As I say, this was cancelled well before it's time. So it's always a little upsetting that there's only one season to watch. But that season is a great one. If you liked Mad Men, for example, I have a feeling you'll like Pan Am but unlike Mad Men, the focus is on the women living in this period who have to put up with things such as wearing girdles and being weighed, all as part of their work. You can rent or buy Pan Am on Amazon Prime Video.

Fear Factor

Back in the day Fear Factor was one of my favourite TV shows. This was before I'm A Celebrity... and the infamous eating trials. Before Joe Rogan got all buff and started working for the UFC. And before I realised that I would definitely be eliminated first in such a scenario. When I was in New York in July I mainly had the TV in my room set to MTV. And shows that I haven't watched in years such as Teen Mom and Catfish. But one afternoon when I was having a break before going out again in the evening, Fear Factor flashed up on the screen. This time a brand new series with a brand new host; Ludacris, of all people. Yup, Ludacris the rapper and occasional actor. Weirdly, it works, with the final challenge even being dubbed the Ludacris challenge.

I caught bits of episodes when I was in the US and have enjoyed seeing who won or what happened in later trials now that it's airing here in the UK. If you liked the original, you'll surely enjoy the new and revamped version of it.

So there's what I've been watching this month and 5 ideas for what to watch next.

What have you been watching recently? Have you seen any of the TV shows or movies in today's post? If so, what do you think of them? And what do you think of my 5 ideas for what to watch next?
